IPTV buffering at night

By Daniel Carter · Updated August 2026 · 5 min read

Buffering that only appears in the evening almost never means the service is broken. Here is how to tell what is actually happening, and what to do in which order.

First, work out which side is failing

  1. Does it happen on every channel, or one? One channel stuttering while others are clean is a source issue — ask support for the alternative feed.
  2. Does it happen on a wired connection? If Ethernet is clean and Wi-Fi is not, the problem is in your house.
  3. Does it happen at 2pm? If afternoons are fine and evenings are not, it is congestion on your line, not the service.

The fixes, in the order worth trying

  1. Move to 5 GHz Wi-Fi or plug in Ethernet. This alone resolves most complaints.
  2. Clear the player app's cache. Old guide data cripples older Firesticks.
  3. Close background apps. A streaming stick has very little memory to spare.
  4. Pause other traffic. A console updating in another room will eat the whole line.
  5. Switch to a lower-bitrate feed. Most channels are listed more than once.
  6. Restart the router. Unfashionable advice, still works more often than it should.
  7. Test on the web player. If the browser is clean and the TV app is not, the app is the problem, not the stream.

When it really is the provider

Report it if the same channels fail across every device, on a wired connection, at different times of day, and the web player fails too. Send the channel name, the device and the exact time — that is what makes a fix possible instead of a guess.

Preventing it before a big night

  • Wire the box in for anything live and important.
  • Start the stream ten minutes early rather than at kick-off.
  • Have the web player open on a laptop as an instant fallback.
